Arsenal Eye Murillo in Swap Deal as January Transfer Plan Takes Shape
Arsenal's £70m Murillo Swap Deal Plan Revealed

While cruising at the Premier League summit, Arsenal are already laying the groundwork for January reinforcements, with a strategic move for Nottingham Forest defender Murillo emerging as a key target.

The Defensive Reinforcement Plan

Despite boasting the league's most formidable defence, having conceded just six goals, manager Mikel Arteta is not resting on his laurels. The Gunners' defensive solidity presents a stark contrast to rivals like Liverpool, who have let in 20 goals. According to reports from Caught Offside, the club is monitoring Murillo, the left-sided Brazilian centre-back who is crucial to Forest's survival hopes.

The 23-year-old is on a long-term contract at the City Ground, making a straight cash purchase a complex and expensive endeavour, with a potential fee in the region of £70 million. This has led to speculation of a creative swap deal to facilitate the transfer.

Potential Swap Deal Scenarios

Arsenal are considering two primary options to sweeten the deal for Forest. One proposal involves sending young defender Cristhian Mosquera to Nottingham on loan for the remainder of the season. This would provide Forest with an immediate, high-quality replacement for Murillo, giving them time to source a permanent solution.

The more compelling option, however, involves Ben White. The 28-year-old converted centre-half has found game time limited this season, playing second fiddle to Julien Timber at right-back. Including White in the deal could be a logical move for all parties. It would offer Forest an experienced Premier League defender, while giving White the consistent playing time he currently lacks at the Emirates.

Murillo's Stance on a Big Move

Encouragingly for Arteta, the player himself has previously expressed a desire to make the step up to a major club. In an interview on the Benja Me Mucho podcast last season, Murillo revealed his career plan. "I thought, 'I'll go to Nottingham Forest, have a good year and then I'll go to a big club'," he said.

When pressed on his preferred destination, he specifically mentioned Arsenal. "I'd choose Manchester City but it would be more difficult for me to be a regular starter... There's City, Arsenal as well who are fighting for the Premier League title." He also noted Liverpool as another potential option, making it clear his ambitions lie beyond his current relegation battle.

This public admission significantly boosts Arsenal's chances of convincing the player, should they formalise their interest when the transfer window reopens.
