Arsenal have been given another opportunity to sign Sandro Tonali, a target for Manchester United and Tottenham, as they pursue his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes. Mikel Arteta is determined to add a top-class midfielder this summer after guiding the Gunners to the Premier League title last season.
Arsenal's renewed interest in Tonali
Arsenal were heavily linked with Tonali in the January transfer window, with representatives offering the Italian to the club. A deal did not materialise, but interest has persisted. However, Newcastle's £85 million price tag and Tonali's wage demands—reportedly £275,000 per week—are seen as obstacles. According to Chronicle Live, Tonali's agents at GR Sports again offered him to Arsenal last week, but the club 'did not entertain' the demands.
Spurs and United lead the race
Tottenham and Manchester United have moved ahead in the transfer race. Spurs had a £75 million bid rejected by Newcastle and are considering an improved offer. Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, are seeking midfield reinforcements after Casemiro's departure and have already signed Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta. Despite this, a move to Arsenal is not ruled out, as Tonali is believed to be keen on joining the champions.
Arsenal focus on Guimaraes
Arsenal are now expected to focus on Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes. Newcastle have denied any contact, but talks are anticipated. Guimaraes, at St James' Park since 2022, may be open to a move after Newcastle failed to qualify for European competition, finishing 12th in the Premier League last season.
Jenas backs Tonali for Arsenal
Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas believes Tonali would upgrade Arsenal's midfield. 'In my opinion, Sandro Tonali is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League,' Jenas told 10bet. 'He had his misdemeanour [betting ban], came back, and his attitude has been brilliant. He's a dictator of a game; he sets the pace and tone. He would be a level up alongside Declan Rice.'
