Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed serious concern over a fresh injury to striker Alexander Isak, despite his side securing a hard-fought 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
Slot's Post-Match Concern Over Isak
Speaking after the match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Slot admitted to a troubling 'gut feeling' about the severity of Isak's issue. The Swedish international was forced off after scoring the opening goal, and his failure to attempt a return to the pitch has alarmed the Reds' boss.
'I don't have any news on him,' Slot stated. 'But if a player scores and then gets injured and doesn't come back on the pitch, and also doesn't try to come back... that's usually not a good thing.' He contrasted this with Conor Bradley, who also went off injured at half-time but had tried to continue.
How the Injury Unfolded
The incident occurred in the 56th minute, breaking the deadlock in a match where Spurs had been reduced to ten men following a first-half red card for Xavi Simons. Isak, who had entered the fray as a half-time substitute, finished coolly past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after meeting a Florian Wirtz pass.
However, his moment of celebration was swiftly cut short by a heavy challenge from Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven. Isak required immediate treatment on the pitch and was eventually replaced by Jeremie Frimpong, unable to continue.
Nervy Finish for Liverpool
Hugo Ekitike later doubled Liverpool's lead, seemingly putting the game to bed. But a goal from Richarlison in the 83rd minute ensured a tense finale for Slot's team, who held on for a crucial three points.
While frustrated by the late concession, Slot found a positive in his team's ongoing development and Isak's contribution before the injury. 'It's a good thing he scored, a good goal, assisted by Florian Wirtz,' he said. 'I see the team developing in a way I'd like to see.' The manager confirmed he had not yet spoken to Isak about the player's own assessment of the knock.
The immediate focus for Liverpool will now be on a medical assessment for their key forward, with fans anxiously awaiting further news on his condition.
