Ben Stokes made a notable return to red-ball cricket for Durham against Worcestershire at New Road, taking two wickets in a strong performance. The England captain, who has stepped away from white-ball cricket, bowled 14 overs across three spells, demonstrating sharp pace and movement.
Impressive Return
Stokes needed only eight deliveries to make an impact, getting extra bounce to edge Dan Lategan's backfoot drive. His second wicket came later, bowling Adam Hose for 59 with a delivery that shaped away before nipping back. Under the watchful eye of England's lead physio Ben Davies, Stokes looked sharp and svelte, having maintained fitness during his injury layoff.
Opening Bowling Role
Stokes started with the new ball for Durham, partly due to Matthew Potts resting and Duanne Olivier not yet ready. This could be relevant for England as they consider options for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. Stokes has opened the bowling only twice in 120 Tests but was England's joint-leading wicket-taker in 2025 with 33 wickets at 23.
His batting returns have thinned, with his last century over a year ago. However, Stokes remains committed to red-ball cricket, having previously showcased his aggressive Bazball approach at New Road four years ago. His approach this summer will be closely watched after a winter of more measured batting.
