Welsh boxer Joe Cordina has been charged with assault following an incident at a petrol station in Cardiff, South Wales Police confirmed on Friday. The 32-year-old former world champion is accused of attacking a man at the petrol station in the city's Gabalfa area on June 10.
Details of the incident
Police were called to the petrol station at around 8:30 pm following reports of an assault. The victim, a man in his 30s, suffered injuries to his face and was taken to the University Hospital of Wales for treatment. He has since been discharged.
Cordina, from Cardiff, was arrested at the scene and later released on bail. He was formally charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on June 22 and is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on July 20.
Cordina's boxing career
Cordina is a former IBF super-featherweight world champion, having won the title in 2022 by defeating Kenichi Ogawa. He lost the belt in his first defense to Edward Vazquez in November 2023 but regained it in May 2024 by beating Vazquez in a rematch. He has a professional record of 18 wins (10 by knockout) and 1 loss.
His promoter, Matchroom Boxing, declined to comment on the charges. Cordina's next fight has not been announced.
Legal proceedings
South Wales Police said in a statement: “A 32-year-old man from Cardiff has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident at a petrol station in the Gabalfa area of Cardiff on June 10. He has been released on bail and is due to appear at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court on July 20.”
The charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison. Cordina has not yet entered a plea.
