The UCLA Bruins women's basketball team has made history by advancing to the NCAA national championship game for the first time in program history. In a tense and defensive battle, UCLA held off a late charge from Texas to secure a 51-44 victory in the national semi-final on Friday night.
Bruins Overcome Texas in Defensive Slugfest
Lauren Betts led the Bruins with 16 points and delivered a crucial block in the final minutes that proved decisive. The game was a defensive struggle from start to finish, with both teams showcasing why they were among the nation's elite defensive units throughout the season.
Turning the Tables on Texas
This victory was particularly sweet for UCLA, as Texas was the only team to defeat them during the regular season. In their previous meeting, the Longhorns had overpowered the Bruins, but this time UCLA flipped the script completely.
The Bruins executed a masterful defensive game plan against Texas star Madison Booker, who had been an All-American performer all season. Booker struggled mightily, hitting just 3 of 23 shots and finishing with only six points after missing 17 consecutive attempts following her first made basket.
Late Game Drama and Heroics
UCLA appeared to be cruising to victory when they built a 13-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. However, Texas demonstrated why they were one of the nation's top defensive teams by mounting a furious 12-2 run that cut the deficit to just three points at 47-44.
That's when Lauren Betts stepped up with her game-changing defensive play. With just 20 seconds remaining and Texas looking to cut the lead to one possession, Betts swatted away Booker's shot attempt. Kiki Rice then calmly sank two free throws to ice the game and send the Bruins to the championship.
Historic Season Continues
The victory improves UCLA's remarkable record to 36-1, continuing what has been the best season in program history. Just one year ago, the Bruins were manhandled by eventual national champion UConn in their first Final Four appearance. This season, they have dominated their way back to the national semi-final and now beyond.
Championship Showdown Against South Carolina
The grinding victory earns UCLA a spot in Sunday's national championship game against South Carolina, the three-time national champions who ended reigning champion UConn's undefeated season in dramatic fashion. The Gamecocks' victory over UConn was so contentious that it led to a tense postgame exchange between South Carolina coach Dawn Staley and UConn coach Geno Auriemma.
For UCLA coach Cori Close and her team, this represents an opportunity to win the first women's national title in school history. The Bruins will face the ultimate test against a South Carolina program that has established itself as a women's basketball powerhouse in recent years.
Meanwhile, Texas (35-4) sees their stellar season end in disappointment, with Booker's brutal shooting performance overshadowing what had otherwise been a remarkable campaign for both the player and her team.
