NYU's Historic 91-Game Basketball Winning Streak Ends in Final Four Loss to Scranton

New York University's historic 91-game winning streak, one of the longest unbeaten runs in college basketball history, came to a dramatic end on Thursday night. The Violets fell 60-52 to Scranton in the Final Four of the Division III NCAA Tournament, snapping a streak that spanned more than three years and nearly 1,100 days without a loss.

Streak Snapped in Virginia Showdown

The defeat halted NYU's bid for a third consecutive national championship and marked their first loss since March 11, 2023, when they were beaten by Transylvania in the Elite Eight. Scranton, who remained undefeated this season at 32-0, advanced to the title game for the first time since 1985, holding off a late rally from the Violets.

NYU's streak was the second-longest in NCAA history, trailing only the University of Connecticut's 111-game run between 2014 and 2017. Under head coach Meg Barber, a former NYU player who returned to her alma mater in 2018, the Violets had built a dominant program known for its full-court defensive system and fast-paced, unselfish offense.

Unlikely Dynasty Built in Division III

What made the streak particularly notable was its context. NYU competes in Division III, where athletic scholarships are not permitted, at a university better renowned for its academic excellence than its athletics. Until recently, the team played home games in borrowed gyms across New York City before moving into the John A Paulson Center in 2023.

Barber expressed pride in her team's journey, stating, "Heck of a ride, incredible journey. I'm incredibly proud and I just want to go back to [give credit to] Scranton. I knew this was going to be a really tough matchup. They're an incredible team on paper and we really parallel each other in so many ways and that's a tough team to play."

Game Highlights and Key Performances

In the semi-final, NYU struggled to gain momentum against Scranton's composed play. The Violets trailed 30-18 at halftime after a slow start and faced a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Despite a late push that closed the gap to 56-52 with 46 seconds remaining, Scranton secured the win with clutch free throws, including two by Meghan Lamanna.

Senior Caroline Peper, the only player on NYU's roster who had previously lost a college game, led the Violets with 19 points. The 22-year-old mathematics major, also the lone senior on the team, said tearfully afterwards, "This team really means the world to me. I couldn't have picked a better team to go out with."

Recognition from Basketball Legends

Even UConn coach Geno Auriemma, whose program holds the record for the longest winning streak, praised NYU's achievement during their run. He emphasized the difficulty of sustaining success, regardless of division level, noting, "Doing something exceptionally well and doing it every day you have to do it is way, way, way more difficult than people think. People say, 'Well, it's Division III.' I don't care if it's Division 12. First you have to go out and execute to the best of your ability."

NYU had entered the game with an average winning margin of over 35 points this season, breaking the Division III record for consecutive wins with their 82nd straight victory on February 8. However, Scranton's composure and quality, bolstered by an exhibition win over Division I opponent Pittsburgh earlier in the season, proved decisive in ending the Violets' remarkable era.
