Australian Basketball Star Nyadiew Puoch Selected by Portland Fire in WNBA Expansion Draft

Australian rising star Nyadiew Puoch has secured a spot in the WNBA after being chosen by the Portland Fire as the No. 16 overall pick in the league's expansion draft. This selection follows a breakout season with the WNBL side UC Capitals, where Puoch showcased her skills and potential on the court.

Puoch's Stellar Season and Journey to the WNBA

At just 21 years old, Puoch made a significant impact for the UC Capitals during the last WNBL season. She averaged impressive statistics, including 11.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. Despite her team narrowly missing the WNBL finals, Puoch's performance caught the attention of scouts and fans alike.

One of her most memorable moments came in a thrilling game against the Perth Lynx in January. With the score tied and seconds remaining, Puoch launched a shot from the halfway line, sinking the basket to secure a 77-74 victory for Canberra. This clutch play highlighted her ability to perform under pressure and solidified her reputation as a rising talent.

Reflecting on her journey, Puoch expressed disbelief and excitement. "Honestly, if you spoke to me this time three years ago, I wouldn't believe any of this would happen," she said. "I go out there, have fun, play basketball, and these opportunities have opened up for me. It means a lot. It's a new expansion team in the WNBA, so I'm excited." Her selection by Portland comes after she was previously drafted by the Atlanta Dream in 2024, adding to her growing list of achievements.

Other Australian Players Joining the Expansion Teams

Puoch is not the only Australian talent making waves in the WNBA expansion draft. Chloe Bibby, an Opals player, was acquired by the Portland Fire as the 11th pick. Bibby spent last season with Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever and the Golden State Valkyries, bringing valuable experience to the new team.

Puoch welcomed the opportunity to play alongside Bibby, noting the comfort of having a fellow Australian on the roster. "It makes it less daunting having someone there, and Chloe's been at a different expansion team at the Bay [Golden State] as well," Puoch said. "She's a great player and a great human, so being able to be around her is really exciting and cool. We also have two members at the club who are Australian as well."

In addition, Opals coach Sandy Brondello, who is leading the other new expansion team, the Toronto Tempo, selected Kristy Wallace as the 23rd overall pick. Wallace, an Olympic bronze medallist, previously played for the Indiana Fever, adding depth and experience to the Tempo's lineup.

Expansion of the WNBA and New Collective Bargaining Agreement

The inclusion of Puoch, Bibby, and Wallace in the expansion draft is part of a broader growth phase for the WNBA. The league and players' union recently completed negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement on March 24, paving the way for an expanded competition set to begin on May 8.

Key changes under the new agreement include:

  • A new revenue-sharing system to benefit players.
  • An increase in the salary cap from $1.5 million to $7 million.
  • Maximum one-year salaries rising to $1.4 million.

These developments aim to enhance player compensation and support the league's expansion efforts, making it an exciting time for women's basketball globally.

Portland and Toronto Build Their Rosters

Portland's selection of Puoch and Bibby marks the return of a WNBA team to the city after 24 years. The Fire also picked veteran forward Bridget Carleton with their first overall selection, signaling a commitment to building a competitive roster from the outset.

Meanwhile, the Toronto Tempo, under Brondello's guidance, chose guard Julie Allemand with their first pick. Allemand, who played for the Los Angeles Sparks last season, brings international experience and skill to the new team.

As the WNBA prepares for its expanded season, the addition of Australian stars like Nyadiew Puoch highlights the global talent pool and the league's growing appeal. Fans can look forward to seeing these players compete at the highest level, contributing to the dynamic future of women's basketball.
