Malik Tillman's bloody sock goal rockets into US World Cup history
Malik Tillman's bloody sock goal seals US World Cup win

Malik Tillman scored a sublime free-kick with a blood-stained sock after his boot was ripped, sealing the United States' 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup last-32 clash. The goal, which came after Folarin Balogun's red card, propelled the US into the last 16 and etched Tillman's name into USMNT history.

Blood, sweat, and a torn boot

During the second half of Wednesday's match, Tillman felt discomfort in his right boot. The top had been torn after an opponent's stomp. At the ensuing hydration break, equipment manager Kyle Robertson sprinted to the locker room for a fresh pair. Tillman swapped only the right boot, playing on with a blood-stained sock underneath.

Fifteen minutes later, with the US down a man, they won a free-kick just outside the box. After consulting with Antonee Robinson, Tillman curled a stunning shot over the wall and into the net, effectively sealing the match. 'We talked about going under the wall, keeper-side, and over the wall,' Tillman said. 'Some guys doubted me to go over the wall, but I practiced this in training.'

From fringe player to key performer

Tillman's journey to this moment was arduous. After his debut in 2022, he was among the toughest cuts from Gregg Berhalter's World Cup squad that year. He often made camp but rarely started. His breakthrough came last summer during the Gold Cup, where he served as Pochettino's primary playmaker. Despite missing a penalty in the quarter-final shootout against Costa Rica, he converted his second chance to help the US advance.

Captain Tim Ream praised Tillman's growth: 'He's been one of our best players. He does the dirty things and makes hard things look easy. He wanted to feel he had a place, and he's come on leaps and bounds.'

A historic free-kick

Tillman's strike was technically superb. He took five paces back, then one step forward, curling the ball over the wall's tallest member, Stjepan Radeljić, and under the crossbar. He became only the second USMNT player to score a direct free-kick at a World Cup, after Eric Wynalda in 1994.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino said: 'Malik is an amazing player, full of talent. We knew he had that talent on free kicks. I am so happy for him. It was a tough season at Leverkusen, but now he is enjoying his play.'

Looking ahead to Belgium

With Balogun suspended for the last-16 match against Belgium, Tillman's set-piece prowess will be crucial. The US aims for their first World Cup quarter-final since 2002. Meanwhile, the torn boot has already been sent to the FIFA museum, and Tillman will surely treasure the one that sealed Wednesday's victory.
