London Sports Festival Celebrates Commonwealth Games with 3×3 Basketball Pop-Up
City workers and London residents will have the opportunity to engage in 3×3 basketball at a temporary pop-up court in Paternoster Square this summer, as part of the 2026 London Sports Festival. This initiative is designed to infuse the festival with the vibrant spirit of the Commonwealth Games, creating a dynamic sporting atmosphere in the heart of the capital.
Event Details and Schedule
The 3×3 basketball pop-up will be active for one day on 26 May, followed by a more extended presence from 22 July to 9 August. These dates align perfectly with the duration of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, allowing Paternoster Square to serve as a focal point for celebrations. This sport, which was introduced to the Commonwealth Games programme in Birmingham 2022 and will feature again in Glasgow this year, offers a fast-paced and accessible format for participants of all skill levels.
Diverse Sporting Opportunities Across London
Basketball is just one component of the festival's extensive lineup. Organisers have curated a variety of sports participation opportunities at iconic locations throughout the Square Mile and beyond. These include:
- Cage football at The Crescent near Tower Hill
- Pickleball sessions at Guildhall
- Padel courts at Hay's Galleria
Additionally, gold table tennis tables have been strategically placed at landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral. Participants who locate all ten tables can enter a competition to win tickets to the World Team Table Tennis Championship Finals at Wembley Arena next month.
Organisational Vision and Impact
The London Sports Festival is orchestrated by the Central London Alliance (CLA), with a mission to promote healthy living, strengthen community bonds, and reinforce London's status as a global leader in sport, culture, and innovation. Nadia Perrier, CLA director, emphasised the festival's core values: "London Sports Festival harnesses the unique power of sport to bring people together, transforming everyday spaces across central London into vibrant hubs of sporting activity, connection and discovery. It's about inclusion, accessibility, and creating moments of joy whilst encouraging healthier lifestyles – inviting everyone, from local residents and businesses to workers and visitors, to truly 'play their part.'"
Special Focus on Commonwealth Games Spirit
This year's edition holds particular significance as it celebrates the legacy and unifying spirit of the Commonwealth Games. Perrier added: "This year is particularly special as we celebrate the spirit and legacy of the Commonwealth Games, highlighting the diversity, unity and shared passion for sport across nations. Through a wide range of activations and community-led events, including the installation of a pop-up 3×3 basketball court in Paternoster Square, the Festival shines a spotlight on sports that bring people together across cultures, creating opportunities for everyone to engage."
Enhanced Features and Historical Context
Beyond the pop-up installations, the 2026 festival will offer coaching clinics led by professional athletes, providing hands-on learning experiences. Previous editions have demonstrated substantial impact, attracting over 30,000 participants and even setting a world record in 2023 for the longest padel match, which lasted an impressive 32 and a half hours.
The festival's approach includes interactive installations and accessible 'have-a-go' sessions, designed to capture the inclusive and celebratory energy that defines the Commonwealth sporting movement. This fosters an environment of unity and harmony, encouraging widespread participation from diverse communities across London.
