Merton Council has unveiled ambitious plans to launch South West London's inaugural mass-participation, closed-road half marathon in spring 2027, aiming to fill a significant gap in the region's sporting calendar. The event, which will offer 9,000 runner places in its first year, is designed to showcase the borough's landmarks, green spaces, and communities while boosting local health and economy.
A Landmark Route Through Wimbledon
The proposed 13.1-mile course will guide participants through iconic locations, including Wimbledon Village and the prestigious All England Lawn Tennis Club, home of the Wimbledon Championships. Starting and finishing in Morden Park, the route has been carefully crafted to highlight Merton's diverse heritage and scenic areas, providing runners with a visually stimulating and challenging experience.
Economic and Community Benefits
Council leaders project substantial economic advantages from the event, with an independent study forecasting an annual boost of up to £1.7 million for local businesses. In its debut year, the half marathon is expected to generate a net economic benefit of £600,000, potentially rising to £1.4 million by year three and supporting up to 49 jobs. To ensure broad community engagement, the plans include a free 5km community run and a schools challenge, encouraging pupils to run a mile weekly in preparation.

Merton Council has partnered with the Great Run Company, organisers of the renowned Great North Run, to deliver the event. If successful, the council aims to expand participation from 9,000 to 20,000 runners by the third year and establish the half marathon as an annual fixture. A 15-year exclusive delivery agreement with the Great Run Company is proposed to secure long-term stability and growth.
Logistical Planning and Funding
To mitigate disruption, the route avoids major Transport for London corridors, with officers collaborating on bus rerouting and consulting emergency services. The council has allocated £310,000 from reserves to subsidise the first two years, with £220,000 earmarked for the inaugural event and £90,000 for the second year.
