Stunning photographs have revealed that five vintage London Routemaster buses, iconic symbols of the city's heritage, are set to be auctioned off next month. These classic red vehicles, constructed in the 1960s and now approximately 60 years old, present a unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire a piece of genuine British history.
Historic Buses in Impressive Condition
Currently housed at the West Ham depot, each of the Routemaster AEC buses remains in an impressive running condition, thanks to meticulous maintenance throughout their operational lives. Introduced to London Transport's Green Line cross-London and suburban services in 1962, a total of 68 such buses were originally built. They served with Green Line and later London Country before being repurchased by London Transport.
Details of the Auction and Buses
The interior of these buses features old-fashioned seat coverings and designated spaces for used paper tickets, evoking a nostalgic charm. Notably, the back of the buses is partially open, a design that historically allowed passengers to hop off with ease. Nigel Binks, Associate Director of UK Sales at Wilsons Auctions, emphasized their significance: "These are instantly recognisable, unmistakably British, and a lasting symbol of the city’s heritage. Interested bidders will be pleased to hear that all five buses are running."
He added, "We are honoured to be working with Transport For London on this auction. It’s a privilege to offer buyers a rare opportunity to secure pieces of genuine history." While no guide price has been set, a similar model sold privately for around £30,000 in December 2024, indicating potential value. The simultaneous sale of five vehicles is considered quite rare, heightening interest among potential buyers.
