Pastor Faces Manslaughter Charge Over Baptism Drowning in Birmingham

Cheryl Bartley, a 48-year-old pastor, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter following the death of Robert Smith, 61, during a baptism ceremony in Birmingham. The incident occurred in 2023 at a residence on Slade Road in Erdington, where Smith drowned in a paddling pool set up in the back garden.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The baptism ceremony was filmed and livestreamed, with approximately a dozen congregants present. Robert Smith, originally from Jamaica and a resident of the UK for at least 25 years, worked as a barber and was a grandfather to seven grandchildren. Emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service with two vehicles, a paramedic officer, and a critical care car from Midlands Air Ambulance, were called on October 8, 2023, but medics were unable to save Smith, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Legal Proceedings and Public Interest

Malcolm McHaffie, head of the special crime division at the Crown Prosecution Service, stated that prosecutors have determined there is sufficient evidence and public interest to pursue criminal proceedings. He emphasized the importance of not prejudicing the active case, reminding the public that Bartley has the right to a fair trial and that no reporting or commentary should compromise the proceedings.
