One Nation Fundraiser Relocated Amid Melbourne Protests

A spokesperson for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation has confirmed that a planned fundraising event in Melbourne has been relocated due to concerns over potential protest activity. The event, which was initially scheduled to take place at Giorgio Casa, a bistro in Moonee Ponds, will now be held at an undisclosed location after the venue withdrew at the last minute.

Event Details and Police Involvement

The fundraiser was set to feature One Nation leader Pauline Hanson and former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce. According to a party spokesperson, Victorian police expressed concern about possible protests, prompting the change. The spokesperson also noted that the event was sold out but declined to specify the number of attendees.

Victoria police stated they were unaware of any direct threats to the event and emphasized that the decision to cancel was made by the venue. However, they confirmed they would maintain a presence in the Moonee Ponds area due to anticipated protest activity. The Australian Federal Police redirected inquiries to state authorities.

Planned Protests and Reactions

Several groups, including the Campaign against Racism & Fascism and the Victorian Socialists, had organized demonstrations. The Campaign against Racism & Fascism called for Victorians to “fight back,” while Omar Hassan of the Victorian Socialists declared they would consider it a victory if Hanson and Joyce did not appear. “We will mobilize strongly to show that a party funded by Gina Rinehart, opposing wage increases and supporting wars and bigotry, is unwelcome in Melbourne,” Hassan said.

The Moonee Ponds council also warned locals to avoid the area, noting that Victoria police had advised of the protest and that temporary road closures would be in effect for up to four hours.

Previous Protests

This comes after a One Nation event in Perth, attended by Hanson on Wednesday, drew hundreds of protesters who chanted slogans against her. The party continues to face opposition as it seeks donations amid its “fire the liar” campaign.
