Teen Nursery Worker Jailed for 10 Years for Child Rape in Surrey
Nursery worker jailed for child rape in Surrey

A teenage nursery worker from Surrey has been sentenced to a decade in prison after being convicted of horrific sexual offences against young children, including rape.

A Predator in the Nursery

Thomas Waller, now 18, was found guilty at Staines Magistrates' Court on October 31. His crimes, committed while he was working as a newly-qualified childcare worker, involved victims as young as three years old. The subsequent sentencing took place at Guildford Crown Court.

Waller's conviction includes the rape of a child, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and the taking of indecent images of children. The mother of one of his victims powerfully described him as 'a very dangerous individual', a sentiment echoed by the shocking nature of his crimes.

Nursery's Response and Safeguarding Review

The private Surrey nursery, which cannot be named for legal reasons, released a detailed statement in the wake of the conviction. It expressed being 'deeply shocked, saddened and sorry' to learn of Waller's actions.

The nursery stated that its highest priority is, and always will be, the safety and wellbeing of the children in its care. It outlined the immediate steps taken as soon as concerns were raised:

  • Contacting the police without delay.
  • Suspending the individual concerned.
  • Fully co-operating with the police investigation.

Furthermore, the nursery confirmed it has conducted a full review and has further strengthened its already robust safeguarding policies and staff training. It continues to work closely with the local authority and safeguarding professionals to uphold the highest standards of care.

Community Impact and Ongoing Support

The nursery's statement confirmed that their thoughts remain first and foremost with the two children and their families affected by Waller's crimes. They have provided, and continue to provide, support to the victims' families, the wider nursery community, and their staff.

Expressing gratitude for the ongoing trust from parents and carers during this incredibly difficult and distressing time, the nursery reaffirmed that safeguarding and child wellbeing are its absolute and enduring priority. Thomas Waller's 10-year detention marks the end of one chapter, but the focus remains on the long-term recovery of the young victims.
