Manhunt for 'stocky' prisoner who fled open jail near Dundee
Manhunt for prisoner missing from HMP Castle Huntly

Police have launched a public appeal and an extensive manhunt for a prisoner who absconded from an open jail near Dundee after failing to return from an authorised outing.

Details of the missing inmate

James Fitzpatrick, aged 36, was reported missing to Police Scotland on Tuesday, 30 December, after he did not arrive back at HMP Castle Huntly. The inmate had been on an approved visit outside the prison grounds.

Fitzpatrick is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, with a stocky build and short brown hair. He is known to have connections to the Ayrshire area.

Last known sighting and police appeal

The last confirmed sighting of Fitzpatrick was at around 11.20am on Monday, 29 December. There is information to suggest he may have been boarding a bus headed for Ardrossan at that time.

Officers are carrying out what they describe as 'extensive' inquiries and searches to trace him. Police Scotland has issued a clear warning to the public not to approach Fitzpatrick if they see him. Instead, anyone who spots him or has any information should contact the police immediately.

What is an open prison?

Open prisons, such as HMP Castle Huntly, are characterised by their low-security measures. They house inmates who have been rigorously risk-assessed and deemed suitable for open conditions.

Eligible prisoners are typically allowed to spend much of the day outside the prison on licence. This is to undertake work, education, or other activities aimed at helping their resettlement back into the community.

The search for James Fitzpatrick continues as authorities work to locate him and return him to custody.
