Manchester Mosque Incident Leads to Arrest and Charges
Police were summoned to Manchester Central mosque in Rusholme after an axe was discovered in the bag of a man who had entered the building during evening prayers. The incident occurred on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from law enforcement authorities.
Details of the Arrest and Charges
Darren Connor, aged 55, was arrested at the mosque following reports of suspicious behavior. He has been formally charged with possession of an offensive weapon, specifically the axe found in his possession. Additionally, Connor faces a charge for possession of class B drugs. He is scheduled to appear before Manchester and Salford magistrates court on the morning of February 27.
A second man who entered the mosque with Connor has not been charged in connection with this specific incident. However, he has been charged with an unrelated breach of a criminal behaviour order, according to police statements.
Timeline of Events at the Mosque
Hamad Khan, chair of Manchester Central mosque, provided a detailed account of the evening. He reported that a man wearing a high-visibility jacket entered the mosque at approximately 8:30 PM on Tuesday. At that time, around 1,500 worshippers were engaged in Ramadan prayers, creating a crowded and solemn atmosphere.
Khan explained that mosque officials quickly ushered the man into an office for questioning. It was during this interaction that the axe was spotted in his bag, leading mosque administrators to immediately contact Greater Manchester Police.
Police Response and Community Reassurance
Greater Manchester Police confirmed they had consulted with counter-terrorism policing north-west regarding the incident. However, authorities have not classified the event as a potential terrorist incident at this stage of the investigation.
Assistant Chief Constable John Webster of GMP addressed community concerns following the incident. "This is a time where Muslims come together to observe Ramadan," Webster stated. "They should feel safe in their place of worship. We do give places of worship increased attention during this period, as we do with all religious festivals."
The police force has implemented enhanced security measures in response to the incident. Officers will be working 12-hour shifts to increase patrols and provide additional security presence around Muslim community spaces, particularly during the remaining weeks of Ramadan.
Community Impact During Holy Month
The incident has raised concerns within Manchester's Muslim community during one of Islam's most sacred periods. Ramadan represents a time of fasting, prayer, and community gathering, making security at places of worship particularly sensitive.
Manchester Central mosque serves as a significant community hub in Rusholme, regularly accommodating large congregations for daily prayers and special events. The discovery of a weapon during this holy month has prompted discussions about security protocols at religious institutions across the region.
Police authorities have emphasized their commitment to maintaining open communication with community leaders and ensuring that worshippers can practice their faith without fear or disruption. The increased patrols and extended officer shifts represent part of this ongoing effort to provide reassurance during the remainder of the Ramadan period.
