Tragic Death of London Father Following Alleged Dublin City Centre Attack
A London man has died two months after he was allegedly assaulted during a visit to Dublin city centre, with a 22-year-old now charged with his murder. Anthony Herron, aged in his 40s, passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2025, after sustaining critical injuries in the incident.
Details of the Alleged Assault and Legal Proceedings
The alleged attack occurred in the Temple Bar Square area of Dublin just after midnight on August 21, 2025. Anthony Herron, who had recently purchased a home in London with his pregnant wife and was father to a three-year-old son, was left in a critical condition. He was initially treated at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital before being transferred to a high dependency ward at King's College Hospital in London.
Darragh O'Brien, 22, of Beechfield Heights in Dublin, appeared before Dublin District Court on February 27, 2026, charged with the murder of Anthony Herron. Garda Colin Coyne-Delaney informed the court that O'Brien was arrested on Thursday and charged at 10.04pm, to which he made no reply. The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed that the murder charge proceed on indictment to the Central Criminal Court.
O'Brien, who appeared in court wearing a blue tracksuit before Judge Gerard Jones, was remanded in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for Cloverhill District Court. He had previously appeared before the courts last year charged in relation to the same incident.
Community Response and Fundraising Efforts
A JustGiving page was established to support Anthony Herron while he was hospitalized, describing him as "an amazing person" with his whole life ahead of him. The page highlighted the heartbreaking nature of the incident and aimed to raise awareness about violence and crime. Following his death, the organizer updated the page, noting that Anthony lost his life due to injuries sustained in the attack and that his family now faces the reality of continuing without him.
This case has drawn attention to the impact of violent crime on families and communities, underscoring the tragic consequences that can arise from a single evening out in a city. The legal process continues as the charges move forward in the Irish judicial system.
