South London Man Receives Life Sentence for Fatal Attack After Car Crash

Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, a 24-year-old man originally from Peckham in South East London, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Nila Patel. The violent incident occurred in Leicester on June 24, 2025, after Ahanonu crashed his car while under the influence of cannabis.

Details of the Tragic Event

On the afternoon of June 24, 2025, Ahanonu was driving recklessly on Infirmary Road in Leicester. CCTV footage captured him driving on the wrong side of the road, weaving dangerously through traffic, and undertaking another vehicle. His car eventually crashed through traffic lights and flipped over on Welford Road.

Following the collision, 56-year-old Nila Patel, who had just gotten off a bus after witnessing the crash, was walking home. Ahanonu then launched a brutal attack on her, punching, kicking, and stamping on her. Security officers from the nearby Leicester Royal Infirmary rushed to the scene and restrained Ahanonu until police arrived.

Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome

Medical staff from the hospital provided emergency care to Ms. Patel, who suffered severe injuries including a fractured skull and brain trauma. Despite their efforts, she was taken to the hospital and tragically died two days later. During his arrest, Ahanonu also assaulted a female police officer by biting her, to which he later pleaded guilty.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

At Leicester Crown Court on March 23, 2026, a jury found Ahanonu guilty of murder. He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving, possession with intent to supply class B drugs, and assaulting an emergency worker. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and six months.

In police interviews, Ahanonu claimed he could only remember the collision and had no recollection of attacking Ms. Patel. When shown footage of the assault, he expressed disbelief, stating, "I didn't see that I killed her - I don't remember killing her. I don't even remember driving."

Investigator's Statement

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Emma Matts commented on the case, emphasizing its random and horrific nature. "Ahanonu was unknown to Ms. Patel. After crashing his vehicle, he ran from the scene, violently attacking Ms. Patel. This was the most horrific, violent and random attack by a stranger on a kind, gentle and loving woman who was simply making her way home," she said.

DI Matts also praised the witnesses who came forward, noting that their bravery helped secure the conviction. "Footage we obtained during our enquiries, which showed Ahanonu’s movements in the vehicle just prior to the collision, is frightening and disturbing. A lot of witnesses also spoke to us following the incident, which undoubtedly helped us in securing this conviction."

The case highlights the devastating consequences of drug-impaired driving and random violence, leaving a community in mourning and a family grappling with immense loss.
