DC Fourth of July parade canceled as heat wave hits 102F
DC July 4 parade canceled due to extreme heat

The National Park Service canceled Saturday's Independence Day parade in Washington DC due to extreme heat, with temperatures expected to reach 102F (39C) and heat index values between 110 and 115F (43-46C). The decision was made after consultation with the NPS, DC government, and the Trump administration.

Heat wave disrupts celebrations

The blistering temperatures, compounded by high humidity, have crippled transport services and strained the electricity grid for days. The parade cancellation is the latest setback as the US marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

The National Weather Service issued an extreme heat warning for the region. Organizers announced the cancellation late Friday, just hours before the scheduled 10:30 am start.

Great American State Fair affected

The president's Great American State Fair on the National Mall also suffered from the heat. It temporarily closed Friday after 44 visitors were treated for heat-related illnesses. NBC affiliate reported 11 people were hospitalized, with seven in serious condition.

Freedom 250, the fair's organizer, delayed Saturday's opening and urged attendees to stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and use sunscreen. The fair has also faced low attendance and a broken ferris wheel.

Trump still expected to speak

Despite the heat, President Trump is still scheduled to speak at the fair Saturday evening, following military flyovers and a record-breaking fireworks show. On Friday, he spoke at Mount Rushmore, targeting the "communist menace" in the US.
