A 13-year-old British boy has been killed in a stabbing in Portugal, with police also investigating the death of the suspected attacker at the scene.

Scene of Tragedy in Tomar

The incident occurred in the city of Tomar in central Portugal. According to a statement from the country's Judicial Police, officers from the National Republican Guard (GNR) were initially called to what was feared to be a domestic violence situation. Upon arrival, they discovered a horrific scene.

Inside the property, both the teenage boy and a man, believed to be the former partner of the boy's mother, were found with multiple injuries caused by a bladed weapon. Despite showing detectable vital signs, both were declared dead at the scene shortly afterwards.

The boy's mother was also found at the address, showing signs of having been restrained and assaulted. She was taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Explosion and Attacker's Violent Past

Complicating the emergency response, police reported a strong smell of gas inside the house. Moments later, this resulted in an explosion which injured one of the responding GNR officers.

The Judicial Police revealed significant details about the suspected attacker's background. The alleged perpetrator had previously served a prison sentence for aggravated homicide. Furthermore, the family unit had been flagged to authorities following domestic violence cases registered in both 2022 and 2023.

Ongoing Investigation and UK Response

Portuguese authorities are continuing their investigation into the double death. The case, which has shocked the local community in Tomar, is being treated with the utmost seriousness given the minor's age and the violent history involved.

A spokesperson for the British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed they are aware of the incident. "We are in contact with the local authorities following an incident in Portugal, and stand ready to provide consular support," the statement read. The UK government is expected to offer assistance to the bereaved family.

The tragedy underscores the devastating and far-reaching consequences of domestic violence, with this incident claiming two lives and leaving a mother injured on Wednesday 24 December 2025.
