The Police Service of Northern Ireland has launched an attempted murder investigation after an officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle in Downpatrick, County Down. The incident occurred at 4:45am on Sunday while the officer was chasing a suspect on foot following a vehicle that failed to stop for police in the Fountain Street area.
According to the PSNI, when officers returned to their car, a man was in the driver's seat and drove directly towards the officer. The officer discharged one round from his firearm, but was struck by the vehicle. He was taken to hospital by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries.
A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody. Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones stated that urgent medical treatment was provided at the scene by police colleagues and members of the local community. The stolen police car, the officer's weapon, and ammunition have been taken for forensic examination.
As standard procedure when a police firearm is drawn, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has been informed and inquiries are ongoing. Jones emphasized the dangers officers face daily, calling the incident a stark reminder of the risks. Detectives from the serious crime branch are continuing their investigation at pace.
The PSNI is appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, dashcam, or other footage to come forward.
