Man Shot by Police After Car Driven at Officers in Bury

Armed police in Greater Manchester shot a motorist who allegedly drove directly at officers while attempting to flee a traffic stop. The incident occurred on Bury New Road in Whitefield, Bury, at approximately 3pm on Friday.

According to Greater Manchester Police (GMP), officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver failed to stop and instead drove directly at them in an effort to get away. In response, a GMP firearms officer discharged their weapon, striking the driver.

The driver was subsequently taken to hospital with an injury to his arm. Police have described the wound as neither life-threatening nor life-changing. No police officers were injured during the incident.

As per standard procedure, the case has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for an independent investigation. GMP confirmed that inquiries are ongoing.

In a related development, a 20-year-old white British man has been arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs. It remains unclear if this arrest is directly linked to the shooting.

Detective Superintendent Joe Harrop addressed community concerns, stating: 'We know people in the area will be concerned by what has happened and the visible increase in police officers in the local area as our investigations continue. Thankfully no members of the wider public, or officers were harmed in the incident this afternoon and we thank people for their patience while we remain at the scene. Should anyone have any concerns, please speak with our officers who are out in the local area, they are there to listen and assist where possible.'

Local residents have been reassured by the police presence, and further updates are expected as the investigation progresses. The IOPC will conduct a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
