Police have arrested a 51-year-old man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at the LGBTQ+ nightclub Pink Punters in Fenny Stratford, near Milton Keynes. Officers are urging the public not to speculate on the motive, stating it is too early to determine the cause.
Owner Vows to Reopen
Frank McMahon, whose family has operated Pink Punters for over 25 years, expressed devastation over the destruction of the building but relief that no one was injured. “Whilst I am devastated to say that the building itself has been completely destroyed, I am deeply relieved, grateful and proud to confirm that no staff or customers were harmed, and everybody went home safely,” he said. He added, “Pink Punters has always been about people, not just bricks and mortar. The building may be gone, but the family, the memories, the spirit and the love remain. And let me say this clearly: Pink Punters will be back.”
Fire Details
Thames Valley Police received reports of the fire at 2am on Sunday. Staff safely evacuated a large number of partygoers and residents from the Watling Street area. Footage showed flames engulfing the top floor and rising above the roof. Officers, along with Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue crews, responded, closing nearby roads. At the fire’s peak, 12 fire crews were on site. The suspect remains in custody.
Pink Punters, a venue featuring dancefloors, an outdoor bar, and karaoke, has been a staple of the community for more than two decades.
Police Appeal
Ch Supt Emma Baillie, Milton Keynes commander, said: “This was a significant fire in which a large number of people had to be evacuated. Thankfully no one was injured and staff at the venue worked quickly and effectively to safely evacuate everyone. At this time, it would be too early to comment on any particular motivation for this incident and we would respectfully ask for people not to speculate.”
