The FBI has apprehended a suspect in the deadly shooting at Brown University that claimed one life and injured two others, authorities confirmed Monday.
Suspect Taken Into Custody
The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was arrested without incident after a multi-agency manhunt. Officials said the arrest occurred in a residential area near the university campus.
Details of the Shooting
The shooting took place on Sunday evening at a campus building. Emergency responders arrived to find three individuals with gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
University officials immediately locked down the campus and urged students and staff to shelter in place. The lockdown was lifted after the suspect was taken into custody.
Investigation Ongoing
The FBI is leading the investigation, working alongside local law enforcement. Authorities have not disclosed a motive but said they are examining the suspect's background and any potential connections to the victims.
“We are grateful for the swift response of our law enforcement partners,” said Brown University President Christina Paxson in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”
Community Reaction
The shooting has shaken the Brown University community, which had not experienced such violence on campus in recent memory. Students and faculty expressed shock and grief, with many gathering for a vigil Monday evening.
Counseling services have been made available for those affected. University officials said they are reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents.
