Beartooth's Caleb Shomo Comes Out as Gay: Inside His Life and Marriage
Beartooth Frontman Caleb Shomo Comes Out as Gay

Beartooth frontman Caleb Shomo has publicly come out as a 'proudly gay man,' bringing an end to his nearly 14-year marriage to wife Fleur Shomo. The 33-year-old singer released a statement addressing speculation that began earlier this year following the release of the music video for the band's new song 'Free,' in which he adopted a more gender-fluid appearance.

'I feel compelled to set the record straight before it affects those I love any further. I am a proudly gay man,' Shomo wrote. The makeover had sparked homophobic comments online, including from Attila frontman Chris Fronzak, who later deleted his remarks and apologized.

Shomo's wife, Fleur, has publicly voiced her support for him. In an Instagram post featuring a video of the couple dancing together, she expressed her backing. 'To support him whilst losing everything has been incredibly hard to figure out,' she wrote. 'You can love and support your person through the hardest time in their life, whilst also be completely demolished and lose yourself at the same time.' She added, 'Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do…I already miss it and my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it’s done.'

Who is Caleb Shomo?

Caleb Shomo is the lead vocalist of Beartooth, a band he founded in 2012 as a pressure-free musical experiment while still a member of another group, Attack Attack. He joined the metalcore band Attack Attack in the mid-2000s as a teenager and eventually became its lead singer. After a decade, he left the band, citing mental health concerns, and the group disbanded upon his departure.

Before leaving Attack Attack, Shomo had already begun writing music for Beartooth. He signed with Red Bull Records in 2012 and released the band's debut EP, Sick, the following year. Since then, Beartooth has released five studio albums, with the most recent full-length record arriving in 2023 to widespread critical acclaim.

Much of Shomo's songwriting delves into themes of addiction, depression, and self-image. In a 2023 interview with V13, he explained his candid lyrics: 'I just talk about whatever’s going on in my life. And this time what’s going on in my life is just very different than what’s been going on in my life for the last, you know, eight years prior of doing Beartooth before this record. I guess, if anything, you could say the point is me trying to manifest and solidify just a healthier way of life for myself, mentally, whatever it may be, you know?'

Who is Caleb Shomo's wife, Fleur?

Fleur Shomo is an actress and podcast host. She married Caleb in the same year he formed Beartooth. Recently, she appeared as a supporting cast member in the second season of the medical drama The Pitt, sharing a photo of herself on a hospital bed. 'I just want to say how wonderful it was to be a small piece of this groundbreaking show,' she wrote on Instagram, expressing her desire to return for the next season. 'I spent 4 months on set as background & I’d like to think I used almost every minute of that time watching, learning & taking in everything I absolutely could.'

Fleur also hosted the podcast My Top 5 from 2019 to 2022, which went on a 'summer break' but never returned. In December, she celebrated her 13th anniversary with Caleb, posting: '3 years married today and I wouldn’t change a thing. You’re still my favourite person and make me laugh like no other. I love us. My main lemon for always. You are awesome sauce. And I love you.'

What did Caleb Shomo's wife say about his coming out?

Shortly after Caleb's announcement, Fleur shared a detailed statement describing the past few months as 'disorientating and hurtful,' during which her own mental health suffered. 'To support him whilst losing everything has been incredibly hard to figure out,' she wrote. 'You can love and support your person through the hardest time in their life, whilst also be completely demolished and lose yourself at the same time.'

She continued: 'Nobody will know anything about our marriage like we do…I already miss it and my husband more than anything. Our story was a good one. And now it’s done.' Since then, she has made her personal Instagram account private, though she maintains a public gluten-free food profile. On that secondary account, which had been inactive for over a year, she posted in March declaring, 'I’m back baby!'

As Caleb embraces this 'new chapter,' his fans and the music community continue to offer their support.
