Incensed by Malen's knee-slide celebration in their direction, fans began ripping up seats and hurling them, along with more projectiles, at a heightened police and steward presence. This led to violent clashes, requiring the Young Boys captain, Loris Benito, to plead for calm from his own team's fans. The ensuing chaos caused a five-minute stoppage in play as authorities worked to restore order and escort troublemakers from the stadium.
This is not an isolated incident for Young Boys, who have been previously fined by UEFA for similar disturbances at matches against Manchester City and Celtic in recent years.
Villa's Focus Shifts to Basel
When the football resumed, Villa managed the game professionally despite a late consolation goal from Joël Monteiro in stoppage time. The result reinforces Villa's formidable home record in Europe; since the start of the 2023-24 season, no team has won more European games at home than Unai Emery's side.
With the three points secured, Villa now look ahead to their final group match away to Basel, where a positive result will confirm their place in the last 16.
