Cain Dingle, played by Jeff Hordley, returned home in tonight's episode of Emmerdale following his cancer operation. However, much has changed for him in a short space of time, and his adjustment to life back at home is proving to be a significant challenge.
Cain's Struggle with Post-Surgery Side Effects
Yesterday, Cain experienced a crisis of confidence as he began to process how his surgery would impact his body. He was taken aback to discover that he would need to wear a catheter for two weeks, possibly longer, and he hated the idea of carrying it around. His pride was hurt, and he told his brother Caleb Miligan (William Ash) that he wished he had never undergone the operation because he did not know how to deal with the side effects.
After Caleb left, Cain attempted to sit up from his bed and go for a walk, but he grew frustrated when even this simple task felt extremely difficult. A doctor informed him that he could return home once he completed a walk up and down the corridor, but Cain pretended to be in more pain than he actually was to avoid it. As a result, he spent another night in the hospital away from his loved ones.
Moira and Sarah Step In
It did not take long for Caleb to inform Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) about what was happening with Cain. Moira decided to enlist the help of Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill), believing that Sarah could get through to him. Sarah delivered some home truths to Cain, telling him about how much her confidence was impacted when she went through her cancer journey and lost her hair. She told her granddad that feeling sorry for himself in bed would not achieve anything.
Her words eventually helped Cain. Later, Moira arrived at the hospital and found him after he had completed that all-important walk through the corridor. Moira then drove Cain home, where his sons Kyle and Isaac (Huey Quinn and Bobby Dunsmuir) were thrilled to have their dad back.
Looking Ahead: Cain's Ongoing Recovery
As far as Moira was concerned, this was a time to look to the future after a very challenging and dark start to the year. She was optimistic, but Cain was the polar opposite, clearly feeling very apprehensive about adjusting to life back at home following the operation.
Next week, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) visits Cain and advises him to leave his pride at the door when it comes to his recovery after the catheter is removed. Cain tells his friend that he does not have time for Liam's comments, indicating that his confidence will remain low for quite a while.
