On Tuesday night, the riots across the city reached their street. Neighbouring houses were set on fire, smoke seeped through their door, and masked men gathered outside.

When they called emergency services, they were instructed not to leave their home. Sumayah, overwhelmed by fear, passed out.

The Guardian reporter Hannah Al-Othman speaks to Helen Pidd about the violence and the city's frightened residents.

Helen also hears from a Sudanese refugee and father of four who is considering leaving the city.
