A devastating overnight Russian missile and drone attack on western Ukraine has claimed at least nine lives and left dozens wounded, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Intense Barrage and International Fallout
President Zelenskyy revealed that the assault was one of the most intense in recent times, with more than 470 attack drones and 48 missiles launched by Russian forces. The attack caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure, including an apartment building in Ternopil.
The scale of the assault triggered an immediate international response. Neighbouring Poland was forced to close two airports and scramble its fighter jets to patrol airspace near the Ukrainian border as a precautionary measure, highlighting the regional security threat.
Zelenskyy's Condemnation and Call to Action
In a forceful statement, President Zelenskyy declared that the brazen attack on ordinary life proves that pressure on Russia is still insufficient. He called for Russia to be held accountable for its actions.
He urged continued international focus, stating, We must stay focused on everything that strengthens us and enables us to shoot down Russian missiles, neutralise Russian drones, and stop assaults.
Diplomatic Context and Wider Implications
This deadly attack comes just hours before President Zelenskyy was expected to travel to Turkey in an effort to reinvigorate frozen peace talks. Previous rounds of Russia-Ukraine talks in Istanbul this year have failed to yield a breakthrough.
Meanwhile, in Poland, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski was due to address the Polish parliament to outline the country's diplomatic response to alleged Russian rail sabotage attacks over the weekend, further escalating tensions in the region.
The European Commission was also expected to make announcements on defence and AI, as the conflict continues to shape security policy across the continent.
