Authorities in Arizona have confirmed that a border patrol agent was involved in a shooting incident near the US-Mexico border, leaving an accused smuggler in a critical condition in hospital. The suspect, identified as Patrick Gary Schlegel, 34, is currently described as being in a 'serious but stable' state following the altercation.
Chase and Exchange of Gunfire
According to officials, the incident began early on Tuesday morning when border patrol agents attempted to stop a vehicle at approximately 7am. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos detailed that several individuals exited the car and fled on foot, while the vehicle itself drove away from the scene. Roughly thirty minutes later, agents located the same car and made another attempt to halt it.
This time, the driver abandoned the vehicle and ran, prompting a border agent to pursue him on foot. During the chase, the suspect fired shots at an occupied helicopter, as reported by Heith Janke, the FBI Phoenix special agent in charge. In response, the agent, whose identity remains undisclosed, returned fire, striking Schlegel.
Suspect's Criminal Background and Escape
Court records reveal that Schlegel has a significant criminal history. He was convicted in federal court in 2023 for smuggling unauthorised migrants and illegally possessing firearms as a felon. Following his conviction, he received a three-year prison sentence but was transferred to an institutional facility known as Dismas Charities to serve part of his term.
However, Schlegel escaped from this facility in 2024, according to official documents. He is currently being held on a warrant issued for his arrest last year by the US Marshals Service. Janke indicated that Schlegel is likely to face federal charges, including assault on a federal officer, alien smuggling, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Response and Investigation
Emergency services from the Santa Rita Fire District responded promptly to the shooting scene and transported Schlegel to a regional trauma centre for medical treatment. Sheriff Nanos provided the update on his condition, emphasising the seriousness of his injuries.
Fortunately, the border agent involved in the incident was not shot or injured during the exchange. Both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff's Office have launched investigations into the shooting to determine the full circumstances surrounding the event.
