Retirement is no longer just about putting your feet up at home. A growing number of Britons are choosing to relocate in their later years, and a new study by Legal & General has identified the perfect spot to do so. The constituency of Chesham and Amersham in Buckinghamshire has been crowned the UK’s finest retirement destination, scoring 74 out of 100.
This accolade comes as research shows a significant shift in retirement aspirations. Legal & General Retail Retirement’s 2021 survey found that 12 per cent of people aged 50 were planning to move away when they retire. The pandemic appears to have accelerated this trend, as city dwellers seek more space, lower living costs, and a connection to nature.
A comprehensive study of all British constituencies
To determine the best places to retire, Legal & General analysed every constituency in the UK. Each area was ranked against a range of essential categories including housing, health, community, finances, nature, and access to amenities. These factors are widely considered to be the pillars of a good quality of life.
Within those six categories, the research examined more specific criteria. This included the availability of sheltered housing for older people, the cost of living, self-reported happiness levels, and the ease of travel to supermarkets and other vital services. The result is a detailed picture of what retirement life really feels like in each location.
The key to a happy retirement
Lorna Shah, Managing Director at Legal & General’s Retail Retirement, commented: “This research gives us a more complete picture of what shapes a happy later life. It's not just about one factor - it's the combination of health, social connections, environment, and financial security that all play a part in retirement wellbeing.”
Her comments highlight why Chesham and Amersham scored so highly. The constituency offers a balanced mix of rural tranquillity and urban convenience, which are often hard to find together.

Interestingly, Buckinghamshire appears twice in the top five, with Beaconsfield claiming second place. Surrey also performs strongly, with four constituencies in the list, making the South East of England the clear winner for retirement living.
Why Chesham and Amersham stand out
The winning constituency brings together two neighbouring market towns that sit within the Chiltern Hills. Both are surrounded by abundant greenery and countryside charm, offering retirees a peaceful environment and numerous walking trails to explore in their spare time.
Accessibility to London is another key advantage. While the towns feel a world away from the capital, they remain remarkably close, meaning pensioners can still enjoy shopping trips, dining, and cultural events without a long journey. Chesham, in particular, benefits from a direct connection to London’s Metropolitan Line, making travel straightforward.
Chesham is also the larger of the two towns, with a thriving high street. Residents can walk to welcoming cafes, browse through independent shops, and drop into classic local pubs. This sense of community is essential for avoiding loneliness in later life, a factor that the research took into account.
The study’s methodology shows that a truly great retirement destination goes beyond scenic beauty. It needs to offer practical support, social opportunities, and financial sense all at once. Chesham and Amersham have evidently struck that balance.
