Portland Thorns midfielder Olivia Moultrie has been placed on the season-ending injury list due to an ACL injury, as announced by the National Women’s Soccer League team on Tuesday. The 20-year-old, who also represents the US national team, sustained the injury to her right knee during training last week.
Moultrie's Reaction and Team Support
In an emotional Instagram post, Moultrie expressed her devastation: “Heartbroken doesn’t even begin to sum up all of the feelings right now. To be taken away from something you love more than anything is a feeling I never wanted to experience. I know there is a reason this path has been chosen for me and I can’t promise everything but I can promise I’ll be back and I’ll be better.”
Jeff Agoos, president and general manager of the Thorns, offered the club’s full backing in a statement: “Olivia is one of the most driven players I have been around, and she will use that drive during her recovery and rehabilitation. She has our full support and every resource this club can put behind her.”
Season Stats and Career Highlights
Before the injury, Moultrie recorded five goals and five assists for the Thorns this season. She joined Portland in 2021 after successfully suing the NWSL over a rule that barred teams from signing players under 18. On the international stage, Moultrie has earned 18 caps for the United States, scoring five goals, and was named US Soccer Young Player of the Year in 2023.
Impact on Upcoming Tournaments
Moultrie is likely to miss the Concacaf W Championship, which serves as qualifying for next summer’s Women’s World Cup. Her absence will be a significant loss for both club and country as she begins her recovery.
