Lucy Davis, the actress best known for playing Dawn Tinsley in the BBC sitcom The Office, has revealed she has been diagnosed with incurable stage four breast cancer. The 53-year-old, daughter of comedian Jasper Carrott, shared the news in a social media post on Tuesday, stating that the cancer has metastasised to her bones, including her spine, right hip, and ribs, and that it is too late for chemotherapy.
Diagnosis and Current Condition
Davis said she was diagnosed a year and a half ago. In her post, she explained that the cancer has spread, making it incurable. She described her current state, noting that standing and walking for long periods can be difficult and that she sometimes needs a wheelchair. She wrote: "As of now, I'm trying to live out whatever might be left of my life in as fun a way as I possibly can."
She also shared a video of herself ringing a bell and reciting a rhyme common in cancer treatment centres to mark the end of treatment. The rhyme goes: "Ring this bell three times well. It's a toll to clearly say my treatments are done, the course is run, and I am on my way."
Humour and Peace
Davis emphasised the role of humour in coping with the illness, asking friends and family to "poke fun" at her as much as possible and not to treat her like a "sick person". She said, "There's nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you're unwell." She added that she is not scared of what comes next and is at peace with it: "I'll see my Gracie sooner than expected, and for me, leaving my physical body just means going home. Any and all grieving is for my family; it's far harder for them than for me."
According to Cancer Research UK, stage four breast cancer is cancer that starts in the breast tissue and has spread to another part of the body, making it incurable, though treatment can control it for some years.
Career and Continued Work
Davis rose to fame in The Office, which debuted in 2001 and ran until 2003, playing receptionist Dawn alongside co-creator Ricky Gervais as David Brent and Martin Freeman as Tim Canterbury. The show, known for its mockumentary style, also starred Mackenzie Crook, Sally Bretton, Ralph Ineson, and Joel Beckett. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential British comedies.
Davis also played Hayley Jordan on BBC Radio 4's The Archers for nearly 10 years and appeared in the 2004 comedy Shaun of the Dead opposite Simon Pegg. She said she will continue working for animal rights and hopes to keep acting, calling it one of the "biggest joys" of her life. She wished others on a similar journey well, saying, "Cancer asks a lot from us, physically and mentally. And we all get to do it however we choose."
