Health officials in Louisiana are warning beachgoers to take precautions after a surge in flesh-eating bacteria infections in coastal waters. Nine cases of Vibrio vulnificus have been reported in the state this year, with all patients requiring hospitalization and five deaths, according to state health authorities.
Bacteria thrives in brackish coastal waters
Vibrio vulnificus, a bacterium that occurs naturally in seawater and brackish water, has found ideal conditions along the Louisiana coast, where estuaries mix freshwater with saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico. This environment allows the pathogen to flourish, increasing the risk for swimmers and those with open wounds.
Among the victims was Basil Kennedy, 77, who developed a severe infection after scraping his leg and then going swimming. He died just three days later, according to reports.
Officials urge immediate medical attention
In a statement, health officials warned: “Seek medical care immediately if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discolored.” The urgency is underscored by the bacterium's lethality: about one in five infections is fatal, with symptoms appearing within hours of exposure.
Climate change is contributing to the rise in cases, as higher water temperatures enable the bacteria to thrive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also notes that infection can occur by eating raw shellfish, such as oysters or mussels, not just through wound exposure.
Symptoms vary by infection route
For those who ingest the bacteria, symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and chills. In wound infections, signs such as fever, pain, redness, warmth, swelling, discoloration, and discharge warrant immediate treatment.
The risk is not confined to the United States. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has warned of an increased risk of infections this summer, particularly during heatwaves and in shallow coastal waters. The Mediterranean Sea, warming about 20% faster than the global average, is becoming more conducive to bacterial growth, though its higher salt levels have historically suppressed Vibrio vulnificus. Scientists caution that as the sea warms and salt patterns shift, higher-risk areas like the Baltic and North Sea coasts could see more dangerous cases.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to avoid swimming with open wounds and to cook shellfish thoroughly to prevent infection.
