Russell Brand's Rape Trial Postponed to October, Two-Month Hearing Scheduled
The high-profile trial of actor and comedian Russell Brand, facing multiple allegations of rape and sexual assault, has been delayed by six months, with proceedings now set to commence in October. Brand, who has pleaded not guilty to all charges, will undergo a trial expected to last approximately two months, an extension from the initially planned five-week schedule.
Details of the Charges and Court Proceedings
Brand is accused of a total of seven charges, including three counts of rape, three charges of sexual assault, and one allegation of indecent assault. These accusations involve six women, with alleged incidents spanning from 1999 to 2009. The trial, to be held at Southwark Crown Court, was originally scheduled to start on June 16 but has been rescheduled to October 12 to consolidate all charges.
Judge Mr Justice Bennathan cited logistical concerns for the delay, noting that a mid-June start could conflict with juror availability during the summer holidays and risk insufficient court time. Fresh charges were added in January, alleging one count of rape and one of sexual assault against two women in London in 2009, supplementing earlier charges from April 2025 related to four women between 1999 and 2005.
Allegations and Background of the Case
During previous hearings, the court heard detailed allegations against Brand. These include accusations of raping a woman in a hotel room during a Labour Party conference in Bournemouth, assaulting a TV worker by grabbing her breasts and orally raping her in a male toilet, and groping a radio station employee after pushing her against a wall. Another woman alleges he attempted to drag her into a male toilet by her forearm.
At his last court appearance in February, Brand, dressed in a fedora, tiger-print shirt, and sunglasses while carrying a Bible, told Sky News he felt "blessed." He has been granted bail and resides in America, though he maintains a home in Buckinghamshire.
Russell Brand's Career and Personal Life
Brand rose to fame as a comedian and presenter of Big Brother spin-off shows in the 2000s. He joined the BBC in 2006, hosting on Radio 6 Music and later Radio 2 until 2008. His Hollywood success includes roles in films like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek. In recent years, he has shifted focus to podcasting and online influencing.
Previously married to pop singer Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012, Brand is now married to Laura Gallacher, sister of presenter Kirsty, and they have three children. A further pre-trial hearing is scheduled for June 16 and 17.
