Model Erin O'Connor Confronts Instagram Over Repeated Removal of Pregnancy Photos
Supermodel Erin O'Connor has publicly criticized Instagram for what she calls "double standards" in content moderation after the platform twice removed nude photographs she posted celebrating her pregnant body on Mother's Day. The 48-year-old fashion icon, who has worked with luxury brands including Dior, Versace, Alexander McQueen, and Chanel, shared the images taken by renowned photographer Nick Knight in 2014 when she was eight and a half months pregnant with her son Albert.
The Contentious Images and Their Removal
The photographs, which O'Connor described as showing her "in her full power," included one portrait where she touches her baby bump with an expression of maternal bliss and another highlighting the swell of her pregnant belly with her nipples visible in shadow. After posting these images on March 15 to mark Mother's Day in the UK, Instagram removed the entire post, citing violations of "nudity guidelines."
Meta, Instagram's parent company, initially restored the content following O'Connor's complaints and media coverage by the Sunday Times and the Guardian. However, within minutes of restoration, the post was flagged as "sensitive" and subsequently removed again. O'Connor received automated messages from Meta stating the content "may show nudity" and violated community standards.
O'Connor's Response and Broader Critique
Speaking at London's National Gallery during an interview for the Picture This series, O'Connor expressed frustration with what she perceives as inconsistent application of platform rules. "It feels inconceivable that a heavily pregnant naked woman could be perceived as offensive when she stands in her full power," she told the audience. "Her body at its most extraordinary, embodying its innate ability to grow, birth and sustain new life."
The model emphasized that these were the first nude photographs she had ever allowed to be taken, describing the experience as "a lovely distraction" during her labor with Albert. She contrasted Instagram's treatment of her pregnancy images with the platform's tolerance of what she called "hypersexualized" content featuring women on a daily basis.
Meta's Policy and Platform Response
Meta's official policy restricts images of female breasts that include the nipple but makes exceptions for breastfeeding, post-mastectomy scarring, protest imagery, and certain educational or artistic content. A company spokesperson explained that their default approach is to remove "sexual imagery" to prevent sharing of non-consensual or underage material.
O'Connor has called for "clearer, more context-sensitive guidelines" and "faster, more thoughtful human review processes" at Meta. She expressed gratitude for media attention that amplified her concerns, stating: "If I can use my platform to encourage others to challenge Meta when necessary, then this experience has been a positive one."
Historical Context and Personal Journey
Interestingly, O'Connor posted similar images with an almost identical message just before Mother's Day last year, receiving approximately 2,500 likes without removal. This inconsistency highlights what critics describe as arbitrary enforcement of content policies.
The controversy comes as O'Connor celebrates her 30th year in modeling while navigating perimenopause. Once described by Karl Lagerfeld as "one of the best models in the world," she revealed at the National Gallery event that she spent most of her career feeling uncomfortable in her body, only finding self-acceptance in the past three years.
As of publication, Meta had not responded to additional requests for comment regarding the second removal of O'Connor's post, leaving unresolved questions about how social media platforms balance artistic expression, bodily autonomy, and community standards in the digital age.
