HBO is set to unveil a standalone, behind-the-scenes special that delves into the creation of its highly anticipated new television adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Titled 'Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic,' this special will provide an in-depth exploration of the making of the first season, offering fans a unique glimpse into the production process.
Inside the Magic: What to Expect
The special, narrated by series actor Nick Frost, who portrays Hagrid, promises an inside look at the epic scale and meticulous care behind HBO's new Harry Potter series. It will be told through the lens of the artists, craftspeople, and technicians who are bringing J.K. Rowling's beloved books to life for a new generation. Viewers can expect plenty of production footage and detailed insights into the lengthy, UK-wide casting process for the iconic roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, played by Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton, respectively.
Cast and Crew Insights
A teaser released on Thursday features interviews with cast members such as John Lithgow and Paapa Essiedu, who play Professors Albus Dumbledore and Severus Snape. Additionally, the special includes time with numerous craftspeople who designed the updated Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. One set designer is shown saying, 'To play in a sandbox this big, it really is incredible,' over a model of the school castle, adding, 'We're adding a level of world-building beyond what the audience is familiar with.'
According to an official synopsis, the special chronicles the extensive process behind finding the new Harry, Ron, and Hermione, while celebrating the awe-inspiring commitment to detail and immense talent that has come together to fill out this extraordinary world. It features interviews with members of the casting, production design, costume design, and creature effects teams.
Reactions and Context
In the trailer, John Lithgow reflects on the significance of the Harry Potter stories, stating, 'The Harry Potter stories are this extraordinary phenomenon. To reimagine the Harry Potter canon, to let it breathe – we get to enact all the things that you know are going on in the wings, but you don't see them.' He adds, 'You wait forever to do something that means that much to people.'
Lithgow has previously addressed backlash to the series stemming from Rowling's public anti-transgender comments, noting that he felt 'stung' but believes the books are 'clearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry.' Rowling, whose Harry Potter world is worth an estimated £20 billion, serves as an executive producer on the series, advising on its development.
Series Premiere and Trailer Success
The behind-the-scenes special will air on April 5, months ahead of the show's planned Christmas premiere. This comes after the first trailer for the upcoming series premiered last Thursday to great fanfare online. With over 277 million organic views in the first 48 hours, it has become the most-watched trailer in HBO and HBO Max history.
The series, which is the first of a planned season per each of Rowling's seven books, is led by Succession writer Francesca Gardiner with direction by Mark Mylod. Production began last July at Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, England, under tightly guarded, big-budget conditions.
