In a major coup for London's theatre scene, global pop icon Ariana Grande and acclaimed stage actor Jonathan Bailey are set to reunite on stage. The Wicked film co-stars will headline a new production of Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, Sunday In The Park With George.
Star-Studded Reunion for Sondheim Classic
The announcement confirms the pair will take to the stage at the Barbican Theatre in London in 2027. This highly anticipated revival will be directed by Olivier Award-winner Marianne Elliott and produced by Empire Street Productions. For eager fans, the crucial date to note is that tickets are due to go on sale in May 2026.
Grande, 32, and Bailey, 37, recently shared phenomenal big-screen chemistry as Glinda and Fiyero in the two-part Wicked film adaptation. Grande's performance earned her an Oscar nomination, cementing the project as a global blockbuster. Their off-screen friendship and professional respect made this theatrical reunion a tantalising prospect for many.
From Instagram Tease to Theatrical Triumph
The duo first hinted at the project with a clever social media post. On Wednesday, they shared a photograph of themselves seated before the iconic Georges Seurat painting, A Sunday Afternoon On The Island Of La Grande Jatte, which inspires the musical. The caption, "All it has to be is good," is a direct reference to one of the show's most famous songs.
The original musical, with music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by James Lapine, premiered on Broadway in 1984. It is a fictionalised exploration of artist Georges Seurat's life as he struggles to create his masterpiece, delving into themes of art, love, and legacy. The specific roles Grande and Bailey will play have not yet been officially confirmed by the production.
Proven Stage Pedigree Meets Superstar Power
While Grande is best known for her record-breaking music career, with seven UK number-one singles and two Grammy Awards, Bailey is a seasoned and decorated stage performer. He won an Olivier Award for his role in a gender-swapped revival of Sondheim's Company in 2019 and most recently appeared in the West End in Richard II in 2025.
This production marks a significant return to live theatre for Grande and a high-profile homecoming for Bailey. Their combined star power is expected to make this one of the most sought-after theatre tickets of the decade. Further casting and creative details are expected to be announced in the coming months.
