Mark Gatiss and Placebo Revive Brecht's Hitler Satire Amid Modern Parallels
In a timely revival, the Royal Shakespeare Company is staging Bertolt Brecht's 1941 satire The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, starring Mark Gatiss and featuring music by alt-rock band Placebo. The production, directed by Seán Linnen, draws stark parallels between the play's depiction of Hitler's rise and contemporary political rhetoric, with Gatiss noting the uncanny similarities to today's events.
Echoes of History in Current Politics
During rehearsals, the cast explored how Brecht's dialogue mirrors modern statements, such as those from figures like Nadhim Zahawi and Elon Musk. Gatiss, who plays the lead role of Arturo Ui, expressed concern over the resurgence of divisive language, stating that the same tactics used decades ago are resurfacing. The play serves as a chilling reminder of history's cyclical nature, with Gatiss emphasizing its relevance in today's turbulent climate.
A Collaborative Effort with Placebo
Placebo's Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal composed the score for the production, describing it as a perfect fit for their political views. The music aims to capture the brutality of the script, with Molko explaining that they focused on representing different forms of violence through sound. The collaboration marks Placebo's debut in theatre, following in the footsteps of other RSC partnerships, and adds a raw, immediate energy to the performance.
Brecht's Legacy and Creative Freedom
Gatiss shared his evolving perspective on Brecht, influenced by debates over the playwright's authorship. Despite this, the production embraces creative freedom, avoiding rigid interpretations of Brecht's work. Linnen's approach allows for experimentation, such as using unconventional props like fish and vegetables to symbolize violence, enhancing the play's allegorical impact.
Audience Engagement and Hope
While acknowledging that the play might primarily attract like-minded audiences, Gatiss hopes it resonates beyond the choir. He stresses the importance of taking action against rising extremism, inspired by the play's epilogue. The production aims to provoke thought and discussion, offering a stark warning from history that feels all too current.
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui runs at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon from 11 April to 30 May, promising a powerful blend of theatre and music that challenges viewers to reflect on modern political dynamics.
