Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh singer known for her 1983 hit Total Eclipse of the Heart, has died at the age of 75. Her family confirmed the news in a statement on her official website, saying she passed away unexpectedly in a Portuguese hospital due to complications from an illness for which she was being treated. They requested privacy to deal with the tragedy.
A Legendary TV Appearance
For many TV fans, Tyler is best remembered for her 2007 appearance on the BBC panel show Never Mind the Buzzcocks. The episode, which has become a viral sensation on YouTube, featured Tyler appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, leading to a series of humorous exchanges with host Simon Amstell.
As Amstell opened the show, promising an end to drunken celebrity appearances, Tyler interrupted by belting out Total Eclipse of the Heart over his monologue. She later admitted to having a glass of red wine before the taping, saying, 'No drugs. Red, red wine. I love my red wine.' When asked if she had consumed any that night, she claimed it was only one glass, adding it's 'good for your heart.'
Unforgettable Moments
Throughout the episode, Tyler's slurred speech and offbeat comments—including an admission that she used to eat sand as a child and a joke that made no sense—delighted the audience. Amstell quipped, 'Should we pump your stomach?' Despite her state, Tyler's powerful vocals remained intact each time she launched into her signature song.
Fans have since celebrated the appearance online. Gaz commented, 'Rest in peace Bonnie! I'll always remember this episode. Bonnie was hilarious!' User @artbabe5165 wrote, 'Bonnie Tyler can hold a tune better than these pop stars nowadays sober.' Ben Padmore added, 'I come back to this vid every now and again, she was hilarious and an excellent sport.'
Health Struggles and Final Months
Tyler's death came months after she was placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery in May 2026. She had been scheduled to perform at the Sunshine Festival in Worcester and several European dates, as well as a December 17 show at Cardiff's Utilita Arena.
Her family's statement read: 'Bonnie's family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for. We will issue a further statement shortly, but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.'
