Russell Brand has broken his silence on his ex-wife Katy Perry's new high-profile romance, making his feelings about her partner, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, abundantly clear.
Brand's Blunt Comments at Public Event
Speaking at a Turning Point USA event in Phoenix, Arizona, the 50-year-old comedian addressed the relationship directly. Brand was married to the pop star, now 41, from 2010 until their divorce in 2012. He told the audience, "Look, Katy Perry, I was married to her. I love her still, and I'm glad that her mom's in the room to hear me say this."
He then contrasted Perry's previous partner, actor Orlando Bloom, with her new beau. "I was okay with Orlando Bloom, but Justin Trudeau? Come on, man!" Brand exclaimed. He went on to label Trudeau a "globalist stooge," expressing strong disapproval of the pairing.
Reflecting on Their Past Marriage
Earlier in the year, Brand had offered rare insights into the breakdown of his marriage to Perry during an episode of his podcast, 'Stay Free with Russell Brand'. He described Perry as "not entirely normal, because she's an extraordinary, massive star" but insisted she was not "weird or off key" or involved in anything "nefarious."
He attributed their split to "the normal human reasons marriages don't work" and stated he has "nothing but respect for her." Brand acknowledged their political differences, noting, "I obviously disagree with her political views, but I probably disagree with some of my wife's political views." Brand is now married to Laura Gallacher, with whom he shares three children.
The Development of Perry and Trudeau's Relationship
Perry and the 53-year-old Trudeau were first linked romantically in the summer of 2025, shortly after the singer's split from Bloom in June. They were spotted on a date in Montreal, Canada.
The relationship progressed, with the pair photographed kissing on a yacht off Santa Barbara in October. They made their first official public appearance as a couple at the Crazy Horse Paris cabaret show in the French capital, celebrating Perry's 41st birthday.
A source close to the couple told People magazine that the pair "have stayed in touch since the middle of summer" but busy schedules limited time together. The insider noted, "They have interests in common. Both are taking dating as it comes. But they are definitely into each other."
The source emphasised the intellectual connection, saying, "in addition to the attraction, they are both smart and love to talk about serious issues," and added that Trudeau "thinks she is terrific."
