EastEnders has confirmed three major returns, with two characters returning for Nigel Bates’ funeral and one controversial villain set to cause further misery. Clare Bates (Gemma Bissix), Josh Saunders (Jon Lee), and Joel Marshall (Max Murray) will all reappear in Walford in the coming weeks.
Clare Bates Returns for Nigel’s Funeral
After Nigel’s heartbreaking death from early-onset dementia, his adoptive daughter Clare returns to Albert Square for his funeral. Clare was last seen in emotional scenes where Nigel, unable to recognize her, lashed out and gave her a bloody lip. Despite this, she was encouraged by Lexi Pearce to stay strong. Gemma Bissix expressed her joy at reprising the role, saying, 'It was a real pleasure to be asked to reprise the role of Clare for Nigel’s storyline.' She added that Clare had to return for the conclusion of his story.
Josh Saunders Makes First Return in Nearly 30 Years
Josh Saunders, played by Jon Lee, returns to the Square for the first time since 1998. His initial stint saw him develop a romance with Clare, while his mother Julie dated Clare’s father Nigel. The four left for Scotland together, but Clare revealed their romance ended when she returned ten years later. Jon Lee said, 'It was quite surreal stepping back on to Albert Square after so many years.'
Joel Marshall’s Return Spells Trouble
Joel Marshall, the misogynistic incel who terrorized Walford, is also returning. Currently serving a six-month sentence, his reappearance is expected to cause problems for his father Ross and stepmother Vicki Fowler, whom he viciously attacked. An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed, 'We can confirm that Max Murray will be returning to EastEnders.' Ross’s recent declaration that he’ll find Joel somewhere else to live upon release may be a key factor.
Max Murray previously noted the challenging nature of the role, saying, 'The character isn’t meant to be liked. It’s very challenging, but equally I’ve got the best support I can possibly have with the whole team.'
