The Mandalorian and Grogu Sets Disappointing Box Office Record for Star Wars
Mandalorian and Grogu Breaks Star Wars Box Office Record

The latest Star Wars film, The Mandalorian and Grogu, has set an unfortunate record for the franchise, delivering the lowest opening weekend box office in its history. Released over America's Memorial Day weekend, the film earned only $82 million (£61 million) domestically, against a production budget of $165 million (£122 million). This figure is even lower than the 2018 Solo: A Star Wars Story spin-off, which opened with $84 million despite having double the budget.

A Disappointing Debut

According to Variety, the film's underperformance suggests that even the mighty Star Wars brand cannot escape the typical bank holiday slump. However, The Mandalorian and Grogu did manage to top the weekend box office charts. Internationally, it earned $64 million, bringing its global three-day total to $145 million. With the four-day holiday weekend, projections indicate it could match its budget. Typically, blockbusters need to earn two to three times their budget to break even.

Critical and Audience Reception

Directed by Jon Favreau, known for his work on Iron Man, the film holds a 62% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have awarded it a much higher 89%. The story follows Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, and his beloved green sidekick, Grogu, affectionately nicknamed 'Baby Yoda' by fans.

Notably, fans have observed that Brendan Wayne and stunt performer Lateef Crowder receive credit just after Pascal, as Djarin rarely removes his helmet. In 2023, Pascal confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that he primarily provides the voice for Mando now, rather than performing physically. He joked with actor Macaulay Culkin that the suit actor was 'much better' than him.

Pascal elaborated: 'I've had the interesting experience and the fortune, really, to be a part of jobs that have these franchise-size successes, and you're very taken care of in terms of their level of exposure and, if you can, being a part of elevating that or nurturing that in any way with your acting. That's been very lucky for me, but they've all felt like these kinds of big machines. So it would be really interesting to see what happens if I can step into something that is more of a risk as far as how big the project is, where it would be more story.'

First Star Wars Film in Years

The Mandalorian and Grogu marks the first Star Wars film to hit cinemas since the sequel trilogy concluded in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker, which grossed over $1 billion globally. In the interim, Disney has focused on live-action series such as Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, and The Acolyte. While many of these series proved popular, none achieved the mainstream success of The Mandalorian and its tiny companion.

Weekend Box Office Top Five

The rest of the weekend's box office top five included previous releases like Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Sheep Detectives. Michael sits at number three, kept off the second spot by Obsession, a Focus Features horror film that has emerged as an underdog success.
