Secret Cinema Plans Major Summer Return to Battersea Park

Battersea Park in South London is poised to host another large-scale immersive cinema experience this summer, with production company Secret Cinema submitting plans for a three-month event. The proposed production would run from July 21 to September 13, following the success of last year's Grease the Immersive Movie Musical at the same location.

Immersive Entertainment with Funfair Rides and Interactive Elements

The yet-to-be-announced show would primarily take place inside the Evolution London venue within the park, but would extend outdoors with additional attractions. According to planning documents, Secret Cinema intends to install funfair rides, a Ferris wheel, stages, and lighting stands outside the building to create a fully immersive environment. Audience members would have opportunities to interact with cast members and participate in various activities, blending film screenings with live theatrical and musical performances.

Planning documents state: "The Secret Cinema events will provide an exciting opportunity to bring together a range of activities including immersive interactive entertainments, theatrical and musical performances, centred around the screening of films in an outdoor environment."

Proven Track Record and Community Considerations

Secret Cinema, which has been creating immersive film experiences for 17 years across various locations, emphasizes its expertise in large-scale event management. The company noted: "Secret Cinema has a proven track record in the design, delivery and management of large-scale immersive events - we have brought together an expert team of designers, technicians and event professionals to help stage what we hope to be a truly memorable series of events in London."

A letter from Evolution London representatives supporting the application confirmed that staff are working to maximize the show's success while minimizing impact on the park and neighboring areas. Installation of equipment would occur between July 5 and 20, with removal scheduled between September 13 and 16.

Awaiting Council Decision and Production Details

Wandsworth Council will review and decide on the planning application in due course. Specific details about the production, including which film or theme will be featured, remain undisclosed at this time. The proposed event represents a significant continuation of Secret Cinema's presence in Battersea Park, building on the positive reception of last summer's Grease production that transformed the park into a 1950s American high school setting.

The summer schedule would provide extended entertainment options for London residents and visitors during the peak tourism season, potentially drawing substantial crowds to the popular South London park. Local businesses and the hospitality sector may also benefit from increased foot traffic generated by the immersive cinema experience.
