TV tonight: a thrillingly murky Welsh drama The Light in the Hall is back, and Bear Grylls runs wild with Flight of the Conchords’ Rhys Darby. Plus: Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka! Here’s what to watch this evening
The Light in the Hall: Still Waters
9pm, Channel 4
Caryl (Sian Reese-Williams) is making a midlife career change to journalism. As she trains, she is drawn to Rhys Owen (Mark Lewis Jones), who has returned to Llanemlyn after 30 years in prison for the murder of his activist cousin. What happened in Caryl’s life that makes her so curious about Rhys? And how does this fit in with the town’s controversial plans to expand the reservoir? A murky drama unravels. Hollie Richardson
Best Medicine
8pm, Sky One
Fox’s teeth-rottingly cutesy US adaptation of Doc Martin continues with The Good Wife’s Josh Charles in the Martin Clunes role. Hugely elevated by a cast of legends, including Frenchy from Grease (Didi Conn) and Iona from Pretty in Pink (Annie Potts), this week, a baseball injury and rivalry hit the quiet seaside town of Port Wenn. Priya Elan
Scamanda
9pm, BBC Two
“She swam underwater after having fluids drained off her brain … I knew that wasn’t right.” Lisa Berry was suspicious of her friend Amanda Riley when she started blogging about her cancer diagnosis. This four-part investigation, based on the hit podcast, unpicks the scandal that would be revealed – and Amanda herself speaks. HR
Bear Grylls Is Running Wild
9pm, Sky One
He has played lovable buffoons in shows including Flight of the Conchords and Our Flag Means Death but before his comedy career took off Rhys Darby served in the New Zealand army. That training serves him well when Grylls drags him off for a rappel-heavy tour of Utah’s vertigo-inducing canyons. Graeme Virtue
Rosa Elettrica
9pm, Sky Atlantic
Newbie witness protection agent Rosa (Maria Chiara Giannetta) babysits a volatile Camorra informer with some hidden talents in this fast-paced Italian crime drama. All the young couple need to do is lie low in a monastery but it soon becomes clear that vengeful forces are mustering against them. GV
The American Revolution
10pm, BBC Four
Ken Burns’ all-encompassing history lesson on the US’s founding struggle marks 250 years since the revolution. The six-part series hears from experts and uses dramatisation to tell the story of 13 British colonies on the Atlantic coast rising up to rebel, starting with the tensions and fighting that led to an eight-year war. Film choice
Wonka (Paul King, 2023), Netflix
Paddington maestro Paul King’s sweet origin story for Roald Dahl’s confectionery genius has a tart choice as lead. Timothée Chalamet isn’t a Broadway kind of guy, but he does have a surprisingly effective singing voice and his gangly exuberance wins you over. Young Willy arrives in town to sell his magical chocolates but a trio of established rivals (Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas and Mathew Baynton) set out to crush him. Hugh Grant steals all his scenes as an irate Oompa-Loompa. Simon Wardell
