At nearly 75, I insist on sitting in the front seat at the top of the bus, just like Justin Myers described in his article on ways to have fun. I have been known to let one bus go and wait for the next one if someone is already sitting in my seat. If my legs ever fail to get me up those stairs, I will know that my time has come.
Butterfly Counts and Country Diaries
Sara Hudston's country diary resonates perfectly with our weekly butterfly count for Yorkshire Wildlife, conducted on a dismantled railway siding here in North Yorkshire. Holly blues are especially abundant this year, but we have yet to spot an adder. However, we did find a huge morel toadstool, which often appears where heavy metal deposits are present.
Reflections on Speed Limits
Regarding the recent report on cutting speed limits, I recall that in 1977, President Jimmy Carter reduced speeds to 55 mph due to oil shortages. We traveled across the US on Greyhound buses for three months, and I believe we saw much more of the country because of the slower pace.
The Language of War
We are increasingly told about 'bad actors' and 'malicious actors' involved in the 'theatre of war.' Whatever happened to the thespian tradition of merely 'resting'?
Defying the 'Old Age' Label
