The Traitors India Arrives on BBC with Glamorous Palace Setting
A new international version of the wildly popular reality game show The Traitors is set to premiere on the BBC next week, offering fans another dose of deception and drama. The Traitors India, originally released on Amazon Prime Video in June last year, will make its BBC debut on Thursday, April 30, at 9pm on BBC One and will be available for streaming on iPlayer.
Expanding a Global Phenomenon
Since its UK premiere in 2022, The Traitors has become one of the most-watched British reality game shows of all time, amassing a dedicated fanbase. The franchise has expanded significantly, with four UK seasons, a Celebrity version won by Alan Carr last year, and adaptations in seven other countries including the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland.
This latest addition comes just three months after the last UK season aired, demonstrating the BBC's commitment to keeping the momentum alive. In a landmark deal confirmed last month, the BBC has secured rights to continue airing The Traitors and Celebrity Traitors UK for at least the next four years, along with international versions from the US, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Celebrity Cast and Opulent Setting
Hosted by renowned filmmaker and television personality Karan Johar, The Traitors India features a roster of 20 celebrities, including Anshula Kapoor, Apoorva, Ashish Vidyarthi, Elnaaz Nourouzi, and Harsh Gujral. Departing from the Scottish castle backdrop of the UK version, this season was filmed in and around the majestic Suryagarh Palace in Jaisalmer, known as The Golden City.
The palace setting has been praised for its visual grandeur, with reviews highlighting the opulent atmosphere that enhances the show's dramatic tension. As the teaser promises, "Betrayal is everywhere. Karan Johar throws open the doors of an opulent palace for the ultimate reality game of trust and treachery. Let the mind games begin."
Critical Reception and Viewer Response
Early reviews have described the Indian version as "gritty, glamorous and full of plot twists." Media outlets have celebrated its engaging format:
- Rediff praised it as "a treat" visually, noting that "every scene looks like it was pulled from a royal thriller" and emphasizing the psychological gameplay over mere monetary competition.
- India Today recommended it for "fans of reality TV, a sucker for twists, or just eager to see your favourite celebrities in a whole new avatar."
- OTT Play called it "worth watching, engaging, and addictive," while FilmFare appreciated its "unapologetically over-the-top" approach to reality television.
Viewers have echoed this enthusiasm, describing the show as "awesome," "gripping and dramatic," and "over the top in the best way."
Future of The Traitors Franchise
The success of The Traitors franchise shows no signs of slowing. Celebrity Traitors achieved a peak viewership of 15.4 million for its finale in 2025, making it the most-watched series of that year. The BBC has promised "even more twists, turns, secrets, epic missions, deception, banishments and, of course, murders aplenty" in future UK seasons hosted by Claudia Winkleman at Ardross Castle.
Additionally, a second season of The Traitors India is currently in production, ensuring that the betrayal-filled format will continue to captivate audiences across multiple continents.
