A month after Scott Mills was sacked from BBC Radio 2, it was announced today that his long-time colleague Sara Cox would replace him. Mills had taken over the Breakfast Show from Zoe Ball just over a year ago, calling it a 'huge honour,' but was fired late last month following allegations over his 'personal conduct' involving a historic relationship dating back more than 10 years.
Background on the Sacking
Mills, 53, was let go after a complaint regarding a historic police investigation into 'serious sexual offences against a boy under 16,' reportedly occurring between 1997 and 2000. The case was dropped around seven years ago due to lack of evidence, but outgoing director general Tim Davie stated it was 'very clear' Mills had to be fired after receiving 'new information.'
Announcement of Replacement
After weeks of speculation, the BBC announced that Cox would step up. She shared: 'There are not enough adjectives to really sum up how I’m feeling about being trusted with such an iconic show but let’s start with ecstatic, honoured and incredibly chuffed.' Mills has yet to comment.
How Long Have They Known Each Other?
Mills began his career at 16, working at various stations before joining BBC Radio 1 in 1998. In 2004, he took over Cox's slot when she went on maternity leave, eventually making it his own as The Scott Mills Show. Cox hosted Radio 1 shows from 1999 to 2014, including the breakfast show. She later joined Radio 2 and has presented its teatime show since 2019.
Mutual Support Over the Years
The pair have frequently stepped in for each other's programmes and co-commentated for Eurovision semi-finals. After Mills' sacking, Cox took over his Eurovision commentary role. In November 2025, Mills supported Cox during her 135-mile marathon for Children in Need, raising £9,523,023. He called her efforts an 'unbelievable achievement.'
Cox's Reaction to the New Role
Cox will launch her Breakfast Show 'this summer.' She said: 'It’s been a dream to host the Breakfast Show since I joined Radio 2 and it feels like a bit of a full circle for me.' She added: 'I honestly can’t wait to wake the nation up with the biggest most fun breakfast show ever.' A replacement for her teatime show is yet to be announced.
Personal Life of Sara Cox
Cox was married to DJ Jon Carter from 2001 to 2005, with whom she has daughter Lola Anne. She later married marketing executive Ben Cyzer; they have son Isaac (born 2008) and daughter Renee (born 2010).
Statements and Speculation
A source told The Sun that Cox was seen as the 'heir apparent.' Mills released a statement acknowledging the police investigation and expressing gratitude to supporters. He said: 'I wish to thank from the bottom of my heart all those who have reached out to me with kindness.'
