Sony is sending messages to PlayStation 4 owners encouraging them to buy a PlayStation 5 in time for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, as Rockstar’s highly anticipated sequel appears locked in for a November release. The emails, shared by the X account GTA 6 Countdown, also appear to have confirmed the game’s ESRB rating: M for Mature 17+.
Sony Pushes PS4 Owners to Upgrade
Ever since Rockstar delayed GTA 6 to November 19, there has been uncertainty over whether the sequel could be pushed back again into 2027. However, recent evidence suggests that is not going to happen. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated that marketing for GTA 6 will ramp up in the summer, and he has been reiterating that date ahead of the company’s next financial call on May 21. Fans are hoping for a new trailer around that time.
While there is always a chance GTA 6 could be delayed again, Sony has given fans a reason to be hopeful by pestering PlayStation 4 owners to upgrade to a PlayStation 5 in time for its launch. As shared by GTA 6 Countdown, Sony has been pushing out emails and messages to PlayStation 4 owners who have either pre-ordered GTA 6 or played GTA 5 extensively. One message from PlayStation reads: “GTA 6 is on your wishlist. Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026.”
ESRB Rating Revealed
Additionally, these emails appear to have outed the game’s ESRB rating, although it comes as no surprise. According to Sony, GTA 6 will be rated M for Mature 17+ due to the usual mix of blood and gore, intense violence, mature humour, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. Rockstar’s website still carries a “Rating Pending” for GTA 6, but it would be more shocking if the sequel did not have a 17+ rating, given the series’ history of allowing players to steal cars, engage in gunfights, and visit strip clubs.
Pricing and Release Date
As the industry approaches Take-Two’s next financial call, the big question is how much GTA 6 will cost. Some analysts expect it to be close to £100, but recent comments from the company’s CEO suggest it could be more affordable, at least for the standard version. At the moment, GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
